What’s it like trying to buy a used dirt bike?
Well, it depends on your level of riding sophistication. Newer riders will have different needs/preferences from an Enduro pro.
With that in mind, we’d like to offer a few things everyone should do when they purchase a pre-owned bike. It’s not an exhaustive list, but at least a minimum for finding a workable dirt bike.
Get Help from an Experienced Friend
Do you know a friend who’s a dirt biking enthusiast and can give you a few pointers (including what to avoid)? If so, your first move should be to pick their brain for ideas and where to begin your research. Also, if they have mechanical experience with bikes, that works even better. This is someone you could bring with you to inspect something in the shop and determine whether a bike is in proper shape for trail riding.
Call the Shop or Bike Owner
Next, after researching and identifying something you'd like, contact the owner and ask questions. Here’s where you would inquire about maintenance history, whether they’re the original owner, and how you would complete the transfer paperwork.
Registration Details
Make sure you also ask about the bike’s VIN number. Never buy a bike where it’s illegible. This is how you register it with your state DMV. You’ll have to do a “Bill of Sale,” which in most jurisdictions will involve an electronic form with the DMV. Be aware that some states require dirt bike inspections before registering (others do not).
Other Factors
Then, there are few other intangibles to remember when you’re shopping for a used dirt bike. If you’re buying from a shop, then use common sense to gauge their professionalism by what you see. They should be able to recommend proper oils for various bike engines. Finally, check the condition of the air filters, clutch, brakes, radiator, framework, and other essential components. Again, this is where it helps to do so with an experienced rider/mechanic.
Colorado DirtBike Info is also affiliated with other local bike dealerships with plenty of solid rental resources. Accelerate Adventures, for example, has great volume deals for riders who need something for a three-day dirt-biking excursion. This includes new and used bikes.
