Gearing Up for the Dirt: Your Essential Dirt Bike Rider Kit

It’s nice to know about the essential gear (for any activity) before you participate, and dirt bike riding is no exception.

We’ve compiled a list of 11 things you should have. Some of these are mandatory, whereas others are strongly recommended. While there are certainly other items you can select to augment this list, these are the essentials, which every dirt-biking enthusiast should possess.

11 Things Every Dirt Bike Rider Needs

Helmet - Don’t go cheap here, either. This should include a neck brace to keep your coconut in place during fast racing, jumps, and maybe some turbulent terrains. Try a few on to make sure yours fits comfortably and has materials designed to minimize multi-directional impacts.

Bike Stand - Many dirt bikes do not have one of these. You’ll need one to keep your bike parked while inspecting it, working on it, and so forth.

Goggles - As you might expect, there’s a lot of dirt and debris that might hit your face (including your eyes) during a fast-paced motocross adventure. That’s why it’s smart to grab some goggles that are adjustable, durable, and preferably come with removable lenses for cleaning.

Riding Attire - You want to look the part and protect yourself at the same time while dirt biking. Therefore, don’t forget to select a reliable jersey and pants before arriving at the race.

Knee/Elbow Protection - Knee pads, elbow pads, and body armor protect your joints while riding. This is absolutely required to help minimize serious injury if you come off your bike.

Pit Matt - This goes along with the bike stand to keep it stable when you park your dirt bike.

Gloves - Get gloves and pair them up with effective palm protectors if you wish to do something about the intense vibration from the bike handles.

Boots - There are many brands that offer comfort with medium and heavy-duty materials. Obviously, you shouldn’t show up to a moto race with flip-flops or cheap tennis shoes.

Transportation Equipment - Think about what kind of vehicle you have, and get some transportation gear that will keep your bike secure during transit. This can be as simple as ropes and ties, or you can install something permanent into your truck’s cargo bed.

Fuel Jugs - Dirt bikes have smaller gas tanks, which makes it important to have extra fuel always on hand. Invest in a couple decent utility jugs and keep them full.

Tools for Maintenance - It’s much more efficient to handle your own maintenance on dirt bikes. Yes, there are certain things you’ll have to take to a mechanic, but you don’t want to be everything. So, keep some basic tools with you, including screwdrivers, pliers, tire-pressure gauge, tire pump, chain wax, and a valve stem tool.

Finally, if you need help with locating these items, including where to rent a dirt bike (the most necessary equipment of all), our team is more than happy to help.
